Oak galls

  • 60g bag

Oak galls are natural formations that occur when an oak tree is invaded by an insect, such as a wasp, which lays its eggs in the tree's bark. In response, the tree produces a spherical mass or nodules in the affected area.

These galls are rich in hydrolyzable tannins , water-soluble compounds that are essential for the manufacture of iron gall ink .

Iron gall ink, also known as black ink , is made by combining these tannins with iron sulfate (which gives it its dark color), gum arabic (which acts as a binder), and other ingredients, creating a strong and durable ink that has been widely used since ancient times for writing and historical documents.

Oak galls, being rich in tannins, are a fundamental ingredient in its manufacture and an excellent educational resource to show students a natural and traditional component of this process.
