Ampulla Leonis
The ampullae were small vessels or canteens, with two handles that were used to store oils or perfumes. The most common were ceramic, although later they were also made of blown glass.
The ampullae are also associated with the use of strigils, so it is possible that they contained scented oils for bathing. Hygiene was very important to the Romans and they could not afford to smell bad. Visiting the hot springs was almost an obligation.
In the 4th century AD they also became a gift that pilgrims bought and refilled with water from springs near holy places or with blessed oils.
