An amulet to protect Roman horses

Unlike other fascinum worn around the neck, this piece reproduces an amulet intended to be part of the harness of a Roman horse or draft animal.

The original was discovered in 1989 in Oberesch (Kalkriese, Germany), one of the most important Roman sites in Europe and closely related to the Battle of the Teutoburg Forest (9 AD). Archaeologists identify this find as a protective amulet belonging to the equipment of a horse or draft animal.

The Romans attributed an apotropaic function to these amulets, meaning they believed they warded off the evil eye (fascinum) and protected both the animal and its handler during journeys and military campaigns.

The design combines three very characteristic protective symbols of the Roman world: a phallus with testicles, a complete representation of the fascinum; a hand making the figa gesture; and a second phallus at one of its ends. The combination of these elements reinforced its protective function against evil influences.

The complete representation of the male sex symbolized protection and good fortune, far removed from the exclusively sexual meaning often attributed to it today.

This reproduction preserves the form and character of the original archaeological find, offering insight into one of the most widespread beliefs in Roman popular religion.
