An essential piece two thousand years ago

Today, we close a jacket with a zipper. Two thousand years ago, it wasn't like that. To fasten a cloak or a mantle, there were fibulae, small brooches that accompanied their owners in their daily lives.

It might have seemed like a simple object, but it served an essential function. In winter, a wool cloak protected against cold, wind, and rain, but it was of little use if it opened or slipped off the shoulders. The fibula kept it tightly closed and in place, allowing one to walk, work, or ride a horse with free hands.

Besides being practical, it was also part of the attire. There were very simple fibulae for daily use and others much more elaborate, made of bronze, silver, or even gold, reflecting the social status of the wearer. This iron fibula belongs to the first group: a sturdy, functional, and durable piece.

Its name comes from the shape of its arch, which resembles the Greek letter Ω (omega). Its operation was as simple as it was ingenious: it was enough to pierce the fabric with the needle and secure it under the arch to achieve a firm and secure closure.

From the Roman Empire to the Middle Ages

Omega-type fibulae began to be used in the Roman world around the 1st century AD and were especially common in Hispania, Gaul, and the Rhine regions. Although their primary use was to fasten cloaks and mantles, some archaeological findings indicate that they may also have been used to close certain leather garments.

Their design proved so effective that they continued to be used for centuries. Even after the fall of the Roman Empire, European peoples continued to use very similar brooches to close their wool cloaks.

When you fasten a cloak with this fibula, you are using the same system that travelers, merchants, and soldiers used almost two thousand years ago.
