Papyrus is a vegetal paper that nature has offered us for millennia. It is actually obtained thanks to a plant of the same name "papyrus plant" that mostly grows on the banks of the Nile River in Egypt. Its scientific name is Cyperus Papirus. The ancient Egyptians gave this plant many uses, not only for making papyrus leaves, but also for the manufacture of sandals, baskets or even canoes.

What is the papyrus plant like?

This plant consists of a green stem about 2-4 cm. thick at the bottom that narrows at the top and can measure up to 3 meters in height. At the top, a tuft of thin, elongated green leaves forms. In summer the flowers appear, in a shape reminiscent of the rods of umbrellas, coppery yellow or greenish.

How are papyrus sheets made?

The stem of the plant is used to make Egyptian papyrus leaves. The pith of the stem is cut into thin strips that are placed next to each other, horizontally and others overlapping vertically and pressed so that the plant sap acts as an adhesive. After several days and after having been rubbed with a stone, shell or piece of ivory, the leaf is ready for use. The artisanal way in which papyrus is manufactured today is the same as that used in ancient times. There are small towns that dedicate themselves and live exclusively from the manufacture of papyrus sheets. Each leaf is a work of art, unique and different.
