This Roman lucerna is a faithful reproduction of a scroll-type oil lamp, very common in Imperial Rome. The central disc depicts a vibrant scene from the Roman circus, with a biga (two-horse chariot) in full swing: a symbol of glory, speed, and spectacle.
This type of lamp, used to illuminate homes, temples, and baths, was also an artistic and narrative medium. The scene reproduces the atmosphere of the circus ludi of the first century AD, where the roar of the Roman people accompanied the charioteers in their fight for victory.
