Description:

A scroll-shaped oil lamp with a ring handle. The central disc depicts a combat between a Samnite (heavy gladiator with a large scutum and gladius) and a Hoplomachus (round shield and spear). Beneath their feet is a tabula ansata—a small inscription-bearing plaque—with their names: ACVVIVVS and HERMEROSS .

These oil lamps not only illuminated Roman homes, but also reflected daily life, entertainment, and the passions of the people. Gladiator scenes were very popular, symbolizing courage, skill, and the entertainment of the amphitheaters.

Operation:

It works with olive oil, just as in ancient times, although it can also be used with other household vegetable oils. For added safety, all the lamps are glazed on the inside, which helps protect the ceramic from the oil.

This piece, like the old models, is made using a two-part mold, coated with slip and fired at high temperature, which guarantees a firm and resistant structure.

Even so, when you light it, it's normal for some oil to rise through the spout (the "nose" of the lamp) and drip slightly, just as with the original Roman oil lamps. It's advisable to place a plate or piece of wood underneath to prevent any damage.
