This volute oil lamp depicts Sol Invictus, the quintessential sun god of the Late Roman Empire. His masculine face is framed by a radiating crown, a symbol of cosmic power, and flanked by celestial bodies that reinforce his dominion over the sky.

The cult of Sol Invictus was officially promoted by Emperor Aurelian in the 3rd century AD as a symbol of imperial unity and renewal. Its iconography—triumphant light over darkness—deeply influenced the Roman imagination and persisted even in later Christian art.
