Papyrus roll 60 x 20 cm

The 60 x 20 cm papyrus scroll is a reproduction of an authentic blank Roman scroll. It measures 60 cm long and 20 cm wide.

Papyrus was one of the media most used by the Romans to write official texts, medical documents, poetry, etc. on it. Being much cheaper than parchment, which was of animal origin. Its expansion was much greater.

Thanks to papyrus rolls , also called volumes, longer texts could be written and read in an orderly manner. Just as it would be with a current book. The papyrus sheets were joined together one by one, forming a long strip that was later rolled up to make it easier to read. A cylinder of wood, bone or ivory was glued to the longest rolls at the end of the last sheet to facilitate handling and offer greater resistance and durability. For the same reason there were also those with two wooden cylinders. Papyrus scrolls were much better preserved this way and could be stored more orderly.

The longest papyrus roll that has been found is the Harris papyrus , a roll that measures more than 40 meters, although there are also other well-known ones such as the Ebers papyrus or the dead sea scrolls.
