This rattle is a reproduction of a Roman infant rattle, known in Latin as crepitaculum. This type of object was used by the Romans as a baby toy, producing sound thanks to small balls inside it, in the same way as modern rattles.

Object: Roman infant rattle (crepitaculum)
Chronology: Roman Empire, approx. 1st–3rd centuries AD
Origin of the original: Autun, ancient Roman city of Augustodunum (France)
Museum where it is preserved: Musée Rolin, Autun
Material of the original: Hollow terracotta with small balls inside
Measurements of the reproduction: 13.5 × 8 × 5 cm

In the Roman world, objects that produced sound (bells, tintinnabula, infant rattles, hanging amulets) were associated with apotropaic functions, that is, to ward off the evil eye and evil spirits. Metallic or rhythmic sound was considered protective, especially in the context of children.
