Reconstruction of a Roman pen to write on wax tablets. Numerous "pencils" of this type have been found. The shapes were varied, thinner, thicker, with ornaments...there is evidence of these stilii even in Pompeian frescoes. (to see photos)

This punch had a pointed part and a flat or "blunt" part that served to erase what had been written down on the tabula cerata, what is known as Tabula rasa, that is, smoothing the board to erase what was written. This expression has been preserved to say something similar to "Clean slate."
