Wax tablets ( Tabulae Ceratae ) were another writing medium used in ancient times. It consists of a wooden or even ivory base, with beeswax inside, the wax could be dyed black or red thanks to natural pigments.
To use them, a metal, bone or ivory stylus, called Stilus, was used, with which the texts were engraved on the wax. These Roman tablets were cheaper and easier to obtain than papyrus sheets that had to be imported from long distances.
