Write like a Roman two thousand years ago

The Roman wax tablet was the most common writing support in the daily life of the Roman Empire. Thanks to its wax surface, it allowed writing, erasing, and rewriting as many times as necessary, making it the equivalent of our current notebooks or notepads.

A Roman stylus, a pointed instrument usually made of iron, bronze, bone, or ivory, was used for writing. The point served to engrave words on the wax, while the flat end allowed it to be smoothed and the text erased to reuse the tablet.

Roman writing tablets accompanied merchants, students, officials, and citizens in their daily lives. Accounts, school exercises, messages, provisional contracts, and all kinds of reminders were written on them.

This practice is the origin of the well-known Latin expression tabula rasa, which means "erased tablet" and gave rise to the expression we still use today to refer to starting over.
