Hermes, the god who returned from the sea
Ainos was a prosperous city located at the mouth of the Hebros River, on the northern coast of the Aegean Sea. After the defeat of the Persians, it began minting some of the most recognizable tetradrachms in the Greek world, identifiable by the combination of Hermes and the ram, an emblem of the city's prosperity.
But behind this coin lies an ancient legend. The Hellenistic poet Callimachus recounts that the hero Epeius, builder of the famous Trojan Horse, carved a wooden image of Hermes. Over time, the statue was carried by the sea to the mouth of the Hebros, where fishermen found it floating.
Believing it was simply a log, they tried to use it as firewood. However, the wood would not burn. Surprised and fearful, they returned it to the water... but the sea brought it back to the same spot again and again.
The inhabitants interpreted this event as a divine sign. They rescued the image, venerated it as a gift from the gods, and erected a sanctuary dedicated to Hermes Perpheraios, "Hermes the Wanderer." From then on, the god became the great protector of Ainos, which is why his face presided over the city's coins for generations.
Today, this tetradrachm reproduces one of the most representative issues of ancient Thrace.
